The original fairy tales were frightening for adults and especially more for children. (A study of fairy tales. 1916) In the early 1800’s Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected stories that depicted the unpredictable and often unforgiving life experienced by central Europeans. Their first book was a collection of stories which were based on actual, gruesome events. However, they had to provide lighter interpretations of these real incidents to sell books. (Ogden, 2017)Magic. Nowadays, there a lot of transformed children fairy tales which contain something fairy or extraordinary, fairies, elves, or trolls, speaking animals and trees. What in other words will be all imaginary, fictitious and unreal. (A study of fairy tales. 1916) The phrase FAIRY in Old French language is known as Faie (fairie) or fata in Latina which is the name of supernatural beings, and also means ‘enchanted’ or ‘illusory’. There are many types of supernatural beings from folklore: fairies, pixies, elves, goblins, trolls, dwarfs, leprechauns and even mermaids. There are various descriptions of them from different countries. (Fairies: Real Encounters with Little People, 2007) Invisible beings, supernatural creations or in other words Fairies. In different countries, they got different fairies, and they are both benevolent and malevolent. The most well-known country for believing in the “wee folk” is Ireland, and the most common description of Ireland’s fairies is – it is a small man, wearing all green and pot with lucky charms. According to a History e-magazine “Historic UK” , states that pre-Christian gods and goddesses are descendants of nature fairies, as well as the spirits of trees and streams as it is considered in England. There is a belief in the land where trees are respected and honored that those trees are homes of fairies. However not all of them are good, there are also evil fairies like The Black Annis of Leicestershire, Pagan Goddess from Celts’ times or Spriggans. There is also a typical description of fairies – they are like ghosts, spirits of the dead or were fallen angels, neither bad enough for Hell nor good enough for Heaven. Therefore, when belief in fairies was prevalent, people did not like to mention them by name, so they called them as The Little People or Hidden People. (Castelow, 2017) Fairies in modern representation. For example, the famous series of movies about fairies “Tinker Bell” or a famous comedy “Midsummer night’s dream” written by William Shakespeare, and there were some self-titled movies and theater play based on this poem. Fashion and Fairies. Many fairy costumes were created for those films, and most of them look like the last century gowns or looks like made from leaves and petals. However, not only little girls’ dreams about it, but young ladies also want to dress up as their favorite characters from their childhood. A typical-standard fairy with shimmering wings and simple outfit, as a topic for design inspiration, is too dull, simple and very limited for shapes and details, but Fairies of nature are a lot more interesting and more informative as an inspiration topic. According to the book “Flower Fairies”, Fairies are tiny creatures (the biggest is only 20cm tall) that live in the treetops, marshes, forest floor, wayside, and gardens. Wherever and whenever a seed sprouts, a Fairy baby is born. Each Fairy lives and sleeps in their chosen flower, plant or tree, and as this grows the fairy grows too. In other words, Fairies from this book are nature spirits in modern representation. (Flower Fairies, 1995-2018) Since their places of habitat are different objects of nature or in other words trees, flowers and plants, they are more colorful and give more inspiration. For example ears, fairies have pointy ears in different sizes, which came from elves, those ears have a wave shape, and the tip of the ear is usually sharp. Then their wings, every fairy has their non-repetitive wings in different shapes and sizes. Those wings remind of butterfly’s and dragonfly’s ones, as they both have a lot of lines or veins. However butterfly’s wings more colorful, when dragonfly’s wings are transparent and have this shine as the fairy’s one. Hence, Fairies’ wings are a combination of dragonfly’s and butterfly’s wings, they have different shapes like both of this and can be colorful or transparent with color-tinged or blue-tinged. The place of their habitat is different objects of flora as it was said before they have a particular plant, tree or flower where they live the whole life, and they are dress up according to their homes. If fairy lives in an oak tree she/he will probably have a dress, pants, skirt and others made with oak’s leaves. So every fairy is wearing clothes reminding about their habitat – flowers, leaves, petals and nature generally. Based on this, there are a lot of sub-categories in fairy which can be used for designs. For example ears, the shape of the ear can be used as panels or pockets with wave lines. Wings has a lot of lines from where can be created clothes with many panels or wings on its own can be used as an inspiration for sleeves or back part to make it looks like wings. Furthermore it can be used as a fabric inspiration, as a chiffon, organza and the other see through with the shine effect fabrics. What about their homes? They also can be used. The shape of leaves as a sleeve or pocket, or the shape of petals as panels of the skirt, the veins on this leaves and petals may be an inspiration for fabric manipulation as a different kind of pleats and pintucks as well as for fabric like structural fabric with lines of jacquard. As a steam, liana or twig with leaves can , chain, some kinds of braids, cords or lace ribbons. The flowers on its own remind of lace and ruffles. The appearance of fairy overall as a magiclifesupernatural creation, make think about sparkle and glitter, which in its turn inspire for sequins, beads, crystals and silver details. Overall representation of a fairy gives an inspiration for colour choices such as green as leaves, pink as flowers brownish beige as a tree or skin colour, blue as, transparent wings with blue- tinged, and silver as an magic appearance, and all , colours are in soft shades or pastel colours as it reminds of how fairies tiny, cute and mythical. As a pattern inspiration can be used the pattern of lines from wings in different variations, sizes and thickness or combinations of flowers with stems and leaves or outlines of the flower silhouette as well as leaves one. Trees can also be used as a pattern inspiration: bark of tree, the silhouette of trees and branches of those trees. “Fairy” clothes are more suitable for Spring-Summer collections, because of the colors and the fabrics. Furthermore, all these fairy details are on trend for the upcoming SS 2019. The most “fairies” trends for SS2019 is Blossomy Lightness, Meadow Flora, Verdant texture, Preserved Nature and Prairie Dance. All those trends are very feminine and romantic, inspired by the spring and flower blossom, gardens and flora or by nature overall as well as nature fairies. As for the fabrics for those trends are same as fairies’ fabrics. Upcoming trends fabrics are light and delicate, dry-handle or cotton-based knits, open mesh, light and heavy lace, crepe, hep, jacquard, and linen. Other trends are going to be a flower and hazy prints it could be silhouettes of trees or repetitive pattern of flower or combinations of different flowers, faded and pastel colors such as natural summer tones as an example beige or traditionally feminine tones like blue or pink pastel colors. All these trends are prevalent for those “fairy looks like” brands like Dior Haute Couture, and were used in the previous Fairy-inspired Amato Couture, SS 2018 collection.
